Phoenix is fast becoming one of my favorite bands. This is off the album It’s Never Been Like That. I really thought nothing could come close to Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, but after giving It’s Never Been Like That a full listen through, their talent is pretty undeniable.

i need a doctor by the drums. theyve got a new album out too. its called portamento and the album cover freaks the shit out of me. anyway, the song is cool and catchy, and i like the fact that they are taking their sound in a different direction, as evidenced by the sampling. all in all, cool track.

you can stream the whole album (here: http://niteversions.com/audio/the-drums-portamento/), but I think the first four tracks would have been better off as an ep by themselves.

man…this is a song ive been listening to for a lot of this past summer, and its been hard to put my finger on how it feels. But i’m gonna try to explain it as if it was a play in three acts, each act being another point in my life that i was listening to this song.

in act one, it just blew me away; beats, rhymes, and life, my favorite kind of rap. not sure if this was produced by cole himself, but i love those heavy drums that i’ve come to associate with him and his production.

in act two, it depressed me a little. j. doesnt pull any punches, and at times seemed to even put it on me, listening to this song at this moment. sometimes life does sometimes seem to conspire to bring you down, and on top of that, those holes you dig for yourself look insurmountable, and the only one you have to blame for it is yourself. not a great feeling.

but then, in the final act, i was able to hear the whole song. i wish i had a word other than beautiful to describe this song, but i don’t know how else to do it justice.

tl;dr: j. cole is an mc and producer who has a pretty rare and amazing ability to take his tracks to another level, musically and mentally. can’t wait for the album.
